White Castle!!

Aaaaand, here's a fav of mine. For some reason I wasn't able to find this White Castle in some time. Even tho its been there the whole time on 8th. I think its between 36th and 37th. Eh, its right around there. There used to be one down by K-town, but has since been closed down due to renovations to the building it was in. Sooo, this is the only one left in the city. If you're really craving sliders, this is the only place to go. But, its not in the nicest part of town. And, you may get harassed by homeless/close to homeless or just annoying people. But, if you're craving the Castle, you got to do what you got to do.

Food: Come on, its White Castle.
Recommended: Bacon Cheeseburger, fish sandwich, and chicken rings.
Price: You can try the whole menu for about $10.
Environment: Best to eat and run.
Service: It's a fast food place...

Chikurin

Here's a little place in Forest Hills, Queens. A little Japanese place. We were very hesitant on trying this place. We thought "how could a little place like this have good sushi?". But, after some time and craving for Japanese, we gave it a shot. To our great surprise, we loved it. And, you know that great feeling when you get when you get the check in Chinatown? Yep, you get that here. My favorite is the salmon sushi. They've got a pretty good version. It's no fatty salmon fresh from the fish markets of Japan at 7 in the AM, but its as good as any I've had in the city. It's as good as a Chinese owned Japanese restaurant can get. Yup, Chinese owned. But, they still deliver on the tasty. We've only started going there regularly not too long ago, so we're just starting to explore the many deals this place has to offer. But, if you're a fan of salmon, definitely take advantage of the dollar salmon sushi. And, we've been very pleased by this one dish we've tried recently. Panther. Yep, cheesy name, but seriously tasty. They have a large list of rolls that they've conjured up. Experimental and wacky at time, but totally worth the exploration. And, my girlfriend and I have been on this kick of checking out the fried ice cream where ever it is offered. This place, by far, has the best deal. Pictured below is the serving they give. Two balls of tempura ice cream. They offer three flavors. Vanilla, red bean, and green tea. All are very good. It may seem cheaper in quality than those that you may find in the city, but its a fraction of the price($2.50 versus the $6.50 you'd find in the city). And, it may even be store bought, who cares? As long as its good, right? And, that it is. So, if you're in the Forest Hills area and crave some Japanese cuisine at a great price, check it out. Enjoy! Above is a dish with four pieces salmon sushi, one spicey tuna roll, and the panther roll. And, this is the tempura ice cream they offer. YUM!

Food: As good as any other I've had in NYC.
Recommended: Salmon sushi, panther roll, and the tempura ice cream.
Price: Best I've come across around NYC.
Environment: Japanese done in a Chinese style.
Service: Friendly waitresses.

Virgils!!

Okay, back by popular demand...... by one person. I'm finally updating my food blog. I'll try to be better about this. This is a post for my favorite BBQ place in NYC. I've tried a few others that some have claimed to be better, but sadly they do not compare. This place is located right off of Time Square on 44th St. 152 West 44th to be exact. My friend Warren likes to claim that he discovered the place. But, he likes to claim a lot of things that only take place in his mind. For example, like claiming that he won at billiards against me even tho he's won at most 5 games out of hundreds. It never fails. If you ever meet him, ask him. It's quite amusing. Anyway, back to Virgils. I'm not one to spend too much for a meal all the time. Especially, since I've picked up my own place. So, I stick with the sandwich section. Tho their dinner plates are very good too. I haven't had anything bad here. But, you have to be ready to stuff yourself... or be ready to take home a doggy bag. And, your arteries should be in a healthy condition. There are some dishes here that require a month to recover from, but they're so good.... if you like having that heavy delicious "bad for you" food once in a while. One of these dishes is the Train Wreak Fries. It's a plate of fries that is covered in chilli(I think), cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, jalapeno peppers, and scallions. YUM!! Make sure you have plenty of people to share it with. A good habit that Warren and I have developed from eating at Virgils pretty frequently is to walk at the very least to the 34th St. subway stations before even attempting to sit on a subway. We've made our way as far as the Canal St. N and R. It really helps move the digestion process along. :) This is where I'd usually include a picture of the food. But, my plate was empty before realizing that I had forgotten to take a picture. Sorry! I may add a picture later.

Food: Delicious, but be ready for some heavy food.
Recommended: Sweet tea, hush puppies(classic), train wreak fries(heavy!), catfish poboy, burgers, Virgils pig out(good for 2), peanut butter pie(best I've had), ice cream sandwich(yum!)
Price: I would say medium. Prepare to spend from $20 to $25 per person. That includes the sweet tea, main dish, and dessert.
Environment: Dimly lit wood structure with ads and pictures posted all over the walls. Usually, pretty crowded. Not good if you're in a hurry.
Service: Is usually very friendly. It may be a bit slow at busy times.

Yummy Station

Yep, that's its name. Yummy Station. And, it is quite yummy. It's located on Canal where the East Broadway "F" stop is. This is one of my favorite breakfast places. It also helps that it is very convenient. Its located right next to the "F" train on E. Broadway about two blocks away from my place. This is a interesting place to me because it tries different dishes that you may not see at other places in Chinatown. Nothing fancy, but just simple cheap yummy dishes. Plus, it has some things that I've looked for ever since I've visited Hong Kong. Just about a year or so back, it was hard for me to find a place that had good drinks and good food. It was one or the other. But, this place has a good selection of drinks and good selection of food. What's pictured here is a few items that I like to get for breakfast. One thing that I get all the time is the ham(or spam) and egg sandwich. I wish they made it with the thick bread they do in HK, but I guess you can't have it all. But, I love it and haven't gotten tired of it yet. The noodle item on the right is steamed noodles with sauce. YUM!! I recommend that you eat this at the restaurant if you can. The noodles on the left are Soy Sauce Chow Mein. This one was not the best that I've had. But, not horrible. And, of course, in the back you have the iced coffee and tea mix. They do a great coffee and tea mix. This place has its strong items and some weaker items. But, overall a great place for a quick cheap bite. Oh, and don't expect table service. You order at the counter and they'll call you to pick up your order. It's small place, don't be lazy. :)















Food: Yummy cheaply made food.
Recommended: Iced coffee/coffee tea mix, ham/spam and egg sandwich, steam noodle with sauce, and black pepper chicken.
Price: On the cheaper side of Chinatown.
Environment: simple/basic.....clean for Chinatown
Service: No table service, but friendly counter service.

Coluck

This is Coluck. Located in what I've come to know as "the tunnel". It's a walkway between Elizabeth St. and Bowery. A tunnel. One of my favorite breakfast/lunch places. Fast and yummy! Depending on when you go, you may run into a packed house or a empty dining room. But, you will be seated quickly. I prefer the booths on the side. The service is fast and the food comes even faster. It's not fine dining, but it has the same outcome. Satisfaction in that dreamy kind of way. :) It's another overall yummy foods restaurant. They have a large menu of foods you may not find everywhere in Chinatown. And, they have new items posted on the walls and on newly printed paper menus at the front. In the picture below you see some breakfast items. They have a nice small serving of congee. You really don't need more than this. There are many consistancies to where you can cook congee. This is my favorite. It's basically cooking it to where you can't tell that it was once rice. My favorite is minced meet congee. Next to the bowl of congee are fried stuffed crullers. YUM!! The first time I tried these I was stunned by how I hadn't thought of this mixture before. So simply made with ingredients that I grew up with, yet soooo good! I like to dip it in my congee. But, also very good on its own. AND, behind the two dishes, there is the coffee/tea mix. This is my favorite place for iced coffee and iced coffee/tea mix. They also have a really good cold honey lemon water. So, if you're looking for a fast yummy place to grub down and be on your way, this is your place.

Food: Overall good to yummy!
Recommended: Iced coffee, fried stuffed crullers, congee, and kimchi spam fried rice
Price: Cheap eats, even for Chinatown
Environment: Clean.... for Chinatown
Service: Very fast and efficient.

Goodies

When it rains it pours. This will my second post in two days. So, this is Goodies. A overall good restaurant. But, they're known for their steam soup dumplings. They have three types. I know they have crab and pork. I think the third is fish. I recommend the pork. Be very careful how you eat these dumplings. If you're not careful, you may squirt hot soup into your mouth. Not fun. But, do it right, and its quite the delightful taste. Some would say that Joe Shanghai has a better dumpling. It depends on your taste. If you like a bit of a thicker skin on your dumplings like I do, Goodies is the place for you. Other dishes that are shown here are the Chicken Rice Cakes. It's a thick noodly type dish. My favorite in Chinatown, so far. And, the other is Turnip Cakes or pastries. I know, doesn't sound very tasty. I didn't think so either. But, they are. Quite tasty indeed. Again, try this place. Its a overall yummy food place.

Food: Overall yummy.
Recommended: Pork soup dumplings.
Price: Average for Chinatown, which is cheap eats.
Environment: In the middle. Not the cleanest and not the dirtiest.....for Chinatown.
Service: Decent

Manna 1 Bakery

Finally, a new post. We always want to take pics of the food we come across, but we're always halfway done with the food before we remember. This time, the camera was sitting out. So, this post will be about my favorite bakery in Chinatown. Manna 1 Bakery. I've pretty much tried every bakery in Chinatown, and this stands out to be the best by far. It's a little hole in the wall on Katherine St. It's the second store on your left as you pass Henry St. Tell them Evan sent you. Tho, they won't know what that means........ Anyway, these are our favorite items. First, there is the ham and egg bun. YUM! Usually gone before noon. They're a hot item. Then, there are the curry beef corner and egg white egg tart. The egg white egg tart is just like the regular egg tarts, but softer. And, hopefully healthier! :) Again, all these yummy snacks are best the earlier you get them. They're made fresh each morning. If you go early enough, they're still warm. And, in the background, the drinks. One is iced coffee and the other is iced lemon honey water. Both are quite good. This bakery is not the strongest for their drinks, but they're still quite good. Another item that I'd recommend is the roast pork bun. The best in Chinatown. Try all of their items. Live a little. :) They're an overall great bakery. No seating. BUT, if the day is nice enough, you can walk a few blocks down to the water. There you'll be eating by the water and have views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges reaching in Brooklyn. It's really quite the amazing view. Just avoid the bums. But, that goes without saying. But, if you find yourself a nice little spot, it would make for a nice little picnic..... sort of. :) Or, just take the yummy grub home with you. Anyway, just try it. You won't be sorry.

Food: Best bakery in Chinatown
Recommended: Ham and egg bun, roast pork bun, curry pastry, everything
Price: Soooo cheap!
Environment: Hectic and cramped.
Service: Hectic and efficient

Tenzan

Tenzan-upper west side. Columbus between 73rd and 74th. June introed me to this place. Pictured here is the Crunchy Maki. Its three rolls. Spicey tuna, spicey salmon, and spicey crab. And, the tempura mixed in makes the "crunchy". I have pretty simple taste when it comes to Japanese food. My favorite being Salmon. And, I like crunchy. :) So, this is the perfect dish for me. Plus, they have fried ice cream! Nice! Its ice cream tempura! Those are the sure deals of a good dinner. But, I think they are pretty good in general. I haven't had anything I don't like there. But, do go a little earlier or you will wait for a seat. Go for an early dinner around 6:30.

Food: Overall yummy Japanese food
Recommended: Krunchy Maki and fried ice cream
Price: Average leaning towards the cheaper side for Japanese food.
Environment: Nice bamboo textures.
Service: Very nice.

Hi everyone, this line of posts will be about good grub. Mostly, in NYC, but not only. I was sitting at dinner with June (the other voice on this blog) one night and thought that it would be fun to create a blog for the food that we enjoy. We're both foodies and thought it would be fun and informative to give our takes on the places we like. My thought was that the critic's "hot places" are always packed out and it would be nice to tell other's about the little hole in the wall places we happen upon. I, for one, can't trust a list of "good food" places that doesn't include actual Chinatown restuarants in their list of best Chinese food eats. Sooo, here is goes..... I hope it helps some of you discover your own favorites. Enjoy!!
